Most modern poker games require a player to make a forced bet. A forced bet is an obligatory bet made by a player before the cards are dealt. Some types of forced bets include a bluff, a bluff-defensive bet, and an ante. Those are the three main kinds of forced bets.

In general, a bet is the only way to win the pot, although different players may have different chances of winning side pots. For example, two players may have the same hand, and they tie up the pot, resulting in a winner.
